![]() For me as a developer it is a pity that webtrees don’t have an API for building more services around it. I love the Open Source concept and I helped already developing by testing beta releases or submitting bugfixes. I love it to add/edit data to webtrees directly on a wedding or a birthday. It is also multilingual, supports themes and has features for moderation. I can manage and share all sources by uploading them directly to webtrees, so every participant can check the data and sources. Webtrees has great features for collaborative work and export. Now I can maintain this big tree online with 20 other participants. With webtrees I could import multiple maintained GEDCOM files and merge them to one big tree. I’ve changed from Ahnenblatt to Webtrees 6 years ago and I love it. ** data protection for deceased persons can be set according to the local civil status lawīiggest Pro: very good GEDCOM support active community is very helpful ![]() ** definition of protection rules at the level of family trees, record types, and granular for individual data records ** control which users are allowed to see and edit which information, with a role concept (visitors, members, administrators) * sophisticated concept for data protection and data security * administration of genealogical research tasks * support of location data records and GOV through add-on modules * management of sources, archives, shared notes, media records * good usability in different browsers on a wide variety of devices (including tablets and smartphones) * good usability even with large amounts of data * parallel installation of several family trees Last and not least webtrees is a totally free application and supported by a strong open source community of developers.īiggest Pro: Online Open Source collaborative genealogy application with ton of features and strong community of developers.īiggest Con: Can’t think of any con about webtrees. Importing and exporting GEDCOM data is an easy task and managing GEDCOM data online by adding, modifying, merging or repairing data is just few of it’s features as well as many available options for displaying or reporting the data. It fully supports the GEDCOM standard and is even able to handle non standard tags. Better than expected.Īfter several months of using webtrees genealogy open source application I can highly recommend this solution for geneology enthusiast for its extensive features and how customisable it is as well as providing an easy online collaboration with other relatives in establishing family trees even internationally because you can choose from over 60 languages. Excellent forum help available.īiggest Con: It was intimidating getting started but I am glad I did. Greg Roach (the author of webtrees) runs a dedicated web server and will provide a webtrees server install and maintenance (backups, maintenance, etc.) for a very reasonable price, there is no reason to not leave ancestry now if you have been looking for a way out.īiggest Pro: Privacy if you want, or not. If you are not comfortable setting up website software don’t worry, there is a solution for that. The webtrees forum is very friendly and helpful to all people at different levels of web and genealogy experience, if you are looking for a better way then you have found it right here with webtrees. Webtrees takes some learning but is logically set up and lets you control all aspects of your genealogy web presence, each piece of media can have privacy restrictions, or none at all, your choice. Free at last! Even though I had to use Roots Magic as a middle man to get the media, it was well worth it. Webtrees fit the bill, I downloaded our ancestry GEDCOM and 6GB of MEDIA from ancestry to >Roots Magic< (roots magic is the only genealogy program that does that from ancestry) then exported the gedcom from roots magic, then uploaded and imported the gedcom and media to webtrees. I was looking for a way to show our family genealogy on the web both publicly and privatly without being bullied by a big corporation. First 6 months of using this wonderful software.
